Bearcats Suffer Tough Loss at Home Against Wildcats

by Jared Aber on Mar.03, 2010, under Basketball, Men's Teams

Cincinnati’s last home game of the season came down to the final seconds, but they could not pull through in the end.  The Bearcats faced a strong Villanova team, who are ranked 9th in the country and are in 2nd place in the Big East Conference.  Unfortunately, they lost following 14-point run in the last six minutes after trailing by as many as 16 in the second half.  Guard, Lance Stephenson converted a 3-point play with seven seconds left in the game. This was followed by a Villanova turnover, which led to a 3 by Rashad Bishop, to make it a 2-point game.  Nova’s Scottie Reynolds hit both free throws after being fouled on the inbounds pass to secure the win for the Wildcats.

Bishop had the game high 19 points, followed by Vaughn’s 18, which included 4 from beyond the 3-point line.  Big man, Yancy Gates has improved his free throw shooting lately as he went 7-7 from the line in this one along with 4 offensive rebounds.  Villanova had a balanced offensive effort with six players in double-digits led by Reynolds, who had 17.  This is the last home game senior’s Vaughn and Toyloy would play at Cincinnati.  Vaughn was quoted by ESPN saying, “I thought I played pretty good. It’s a terrible way to end your career, at home with a loss. Nobody wants to lose on senior night. I’m proud of us as a team that we didn’t give up. We didn’t make shots, but we kept it going. We just missed some shots.”

The Bearcats look to positively close out their regular season on Saturday when they take on the Georgetown Hoyas at 12 p.m.

Bearcats Survive Huskies Run Late

by Jared Aber on Feb.13, 2010, under Basketball, Men's Teams

After being up by as many as 15, Connecticut’s full court trap forced some Cincinnati turnovers late in the 2nd half to close the gap to single digits.  Deonta Vaughn’s 4 free throws in the last couple minutes were clutch to secure Cincinnati’s first road victory in over a month.

After being tied at the half, the Bearcats came out aggressive in the 2nd to push to a double-digit lead.  Cincinnati’s offensive rebounding was big in this game, which totaled at 17.  The Bearcat’s leading scorer was Lance Stephenson at 14 points. In addition, Vaughn and Thomas each had 10 points, with Thomas also being the team’s rebound leader at 11.  Coach Mick Cronin said before the game that, “Rebounding and defense on the road are like your luggage, you need to bring them both to win.”  The Bearcats did just that as they out-rebounded the Huskies and limited their opponents shooting to under 35%.

Tune in as Cincinnati looks to win back-to-back road games Tuesday night as they take on the South Florida Bulls at 7 PM.

Bearcats Pull Out Last Second Win Against the Irish

by Jared Aber on Jan.18, 2010, under Basketball, Men's Teams

The game was tied with 4 seconds left, when forward, Yancy Gates put back his own miss to win the game, 60 -58.  This last possession was typical of how the bearcats dominated the boards all game. Gates’ rebound total was 13 with 6 offensive boards, which helped the bearcats to this tough victory.  Much of this win was due to the bearcats defense on Notre Dame star, Luke Harangody, who is the only player in Big East history to lead in points and rebounds for consecutive seasons.  Harangody had 14 points with 11 rebounds, but was held to only 5 field goals out of 20 attempts.

Cincinnati got off to a slow start in the opening minutes trailing 7 – 0.  The bearcats would come back and went on a 9 -2 run with 6 minutes left in the second half.  Deonta Vaughn led the bearcats with 15 and Rashad Bishop totaled 10 points in 24 minutes off the bench.

Wednesday, the bearcats face South Florida, who has an 11-6 record, but only 1-3 within the Big East conference.  Hopefully Cincinnati could stay strong on the offensive glass as they continue to struggle with their field goal percentage shooting 44% on the season and 28% from behind the arc.
